The Call of the Wild is a novel by American author Jack London that was first published in 1903. It tells the story of a domesticated and spoiled dog named Buck. One day he is abducted from his comfortable life as a pet and he is subsequently sold as a sled dog. This is when he realizes what a great life he has had before, and he learns what it truly means to be an animal, having to do whatever it takes in order to survive.

Even though the main character of this novel is a dog, this does not imply in any way that this is either a happy tale or a book suitable for children. The Call of the Wild tells a very grim tale of hate and abuse and of a Darwinian like struggle to survive. It also covers more than its fair share of pain and death. Moreover, this novel focuses on the struggle to survive in a world that is full of meaningless death and cruelty. We may not live like dogs or are treated as such, but some of us know very well what it means having to struggle everyday in order to just survive in this world.

This novel is not for everyone. If you like positive happy upbeat novels I suggest you stay far away. However, if you are interested in a more realistic view of life, and if you like to ponder the grim and survival of the fittest nature of our existence, then this might just be the book for you.
