James Dashner is best known for authoring sci-fi books like The Maze Runner and The Infinity Ring. His latest book, The Eye of Minds, is a techno-thriller about a futuristic world of virtual-reality gaming. The bestselling author recently gave Boys’ Life some special information on books and movies, and even took part in a BL creative writing test.
BL: Between your latest book and the Infinity Ring and Maze Runner series, you’ve had a busy year. What does your daily schedule look like?
J.D.: My days vary greatly, depending on what stage of the process I currently find myself in. In writing mode, there are a lot of intense sessions of writing followed by “rewards” that stimulate my creativity, like movies and good TV shows or reading. But I also travel a lot for promotional reasons, which is also fun, though sometimes grueling.
BL: The Maze Runner movie is set to hit theaters in 2014. What has the experience of seeing your work translated to the big screen been like?
J.D.: The movie is easily the most exciting thing of my career so far. Luckily, I have a studio and a director (Wes Ball) who cares about being faithful to the book. I might die of happiness the day it comes out.
BL: You’ve written about topics like time travel, alternate realities and even science stories. Which topics would you like to write about in the future?
J.D.: I always want to try something new. I’ve written several series now, and I’m proud to say that each of them is unique in its own way. I think the big thing on my wish list is to someday write a true horror novel that will scare the pants off anyone who reads it.
BL: What advice can you give young writers?
J.D.: Practice, practice, practice. Write as much as you can. The very act of it makes you better. And read a lot, of course.
