Why would a student attempt to kill themslves ？For some students suicide will follow a period of depression while for others it is likely to be an impulsive act, perhaps triggered by a traumatic experience, for example the death of a loved one, or by a relatively insignificant event which may be seen as the 'final straw'. I think the o main reasons maybe loneliness and feelings of hopelessness or helplessness. Students may feel that there is no-one there and that no-one really cares or will notice whether they live or die. Or they may feel that no matter what s/he does, nothing seems to get better, and that no-one is able to help. The suicidal person can feel totally alone and isolated.

What we can do to prevent students from miting suicide ? Firstly , Take the student and what he or she says seriously, and try to understand their perspective of the situation. The student may be able to tell you what they need and who might help. Secondly , try to discover what might make a difference without imposing your solutions on the situation and then offer practical help towards problem solving. Thirdly , discuss with the tutors, parents, relatives and friends which might create a supportive neork.

In culcusion, Whilst we will never be able to eliminate the risk of suicide, we can do some things to reduce the risk.
